In Tajikistan, pristine places still exist that have no industry or pollution and where people live in harmony with their environment. One of them is the District of Vanj, situated in the Gorno-Badakhhan Autonomous Oblast, between the Darvoz and the Yazgulom mountains. Vanj is bordering in the North with the Tavildara and Murghob district in the East, with Rushan District in the South, and in the West with the Darvoz District and the Badkhshan Region of Afghanistan. One of the largest rivers of the area is Vanj. The main activity of the local population is agriculture, gardening and animal husbandry. An important food source, particularly during winter, is the mulberry fruit. There are more than 60 varieties of mulberries in the Pamir region, the result of centuries of natural selection and adaptation. Mulberries can be eaten raw or made into jams and syrups and can also be eaten dried – both whole or ground, or mixed with other seeds and cereals to make a traditional sweet food.
